Dogs, Get this Party Started Right

Popovers for Rover? Tex-Mex for Rex? Though they may be willing to eat anything, some dogs have delicate constitutions. They are also natural scavengers, says Debbie Horwitz, a veterinarian and board-certified behavior specialist.

So if you're planning a party, be aware that your dog will want to sniff out tasty tidbits on any surface he can reach and scour the floor for goodies your guests may have dropped. Be sure to keep food on high counters when possible, Dr. Horwitz recommends. You should also develop a plan for cleaning up spills and getting rid of garbage.

Know Your Dog Perhaps the most important piece of advice for party-giving dog owners is this: Know your pet, and trust your instincts.

Not all pooches want to be in social situations, Dr. Horwitz says. "You need to ask yourself, does your dog have good manners around company, around children?" If the answer is no, you should make sure your pup has plenty of space to get out of the way, or, if necessary, a space where you can keep him confined.

Just sticking your dog in a room away from the action may pose a problem, however. "If your dog doesn't like being shut up in a room or a crate when no one's around, he's certainly not going to like it when people are around," Dr. Horwitz says. If that is the case, consider hiring a pet sitter or boarding your dog for the day.

Even if your shindig is an indoor affair, you can still put your dog on a leash. It's a convenient means of controlling your dog's behavior, and it makes taking him out for bathroom breaks that much easier.
